BONE AND SOFT TISSUE SERVICE

Bone and soft tissue sarcomas are a complex group of diseases which have a very complex behaviour and consequently are best treated in the hands of experts. Of all the major cancer types, sarcomas are perhaps the rarest and hence NCCN has promulgated that ” primary bone tumours and selected metastatic tumours should be evaluated and treated by a multidisciplinary team of physicians with demonstrated expertise in the management of these tumours.” Aggressive bone lesions usually present with pain before the swelling is evident however, trivial trauma may also bring tumour to the notice of patient. In contrary, soft tissue sarcomas present as painless enlargement in body part with pain being a late feature. No age remains immune to these and they are known to occur in young children to adults. The most common feature is long standing swelling in extremity or any body part. Earlier a more radical surgery in form of limb amputation was done for these, however today most of these are treated by limb salvage surgery which essentially means that the affected part of limb is excised and reconstruction is done based on the tissue loss. Loss of native bone is treated by insertion of a metallic prosthesis with or without a joint based on the need, a soft tissue defect is reconstructed by free flap transfer or muscle group transfer. Our experts are very well trained in the treatment of all forms of bone and soft tissue tumours.
